On the 1st, in front of the Seodaemun-gu Police Office in Seoul, activists belonging to the End of the Temporary Workers’ Joint Struggle held a press conference announcing the second homeless culture festival, condemning the police for forcibly disbanding the night culture festival held by the metal union in front of the Supreme Court on the 25th of last month. On the 9th, the police once more forcibly disbanded the night cultural festival in front of the Supreme Court of the non-regular labor group.

The ‘Stop Joint Struggle for Irregular Workers’ (herefollowing referred to as joint struggle) held a cultural festival in front of the Supreme Court from 6:30 pm on the same day to urge the resolution of the irregular workers problem and criticize the police’s response to the rally.

However, the police demanded that the protesters voluntarily disperse, saying, “We held an unreported assembly.” The police forced the participants of the cultural festival to disperse at 9:20 p.m. following ordering them to voluntarily disperse three times. Two participants were injured in the process and taken to a nearby hospital.

They were moved to the vacant lot of the nearby Church of Love and continued the cultural festival. They plan to hold a homeless sit-in in the neighborhood until 10 am on the 10th.

The Seocho Police Station previously stated in a request for cooperation in the cultural festival of joint struggle, “An event in which a common opinion is expressed externally regarding a trial pending in the Supreme Court is an assembly that is required to be reported under the Assembly and Demonstration Act.” warned that it might proceed.

On the 25th of last month, the joint struggle was also attempted to hold a night cultural festival and a homeless sit-in in front of the Supreme Court together with the metal union, but it was canceled when the police set up an iron fence in advance and blocked the source. In the process, three cultural festival participants were arrested as red-handed criminals. The participants held a cultural festival nearby, but the police forcibly dispersed them and ended up sleeping in a nearby park.

Joint Struggle has held night cultural festivals and homeless protests in front of the Supreme Court 20 times since 2021. Cultural festivals are not subject to reporting under the Assembly and Demonstration Act.

The police are continuing their hardline response policy following the KCTU construction union’s ‘homeless assembly’ on the 16th and 17th of last month, when it was pointed out that the police’s assembly management was insufficient.
