The firefighters of the Hemeco zone descended this Friday noon in the Thier Philippart district for a major fire which broke out in an annex at the back, in the Thier Philippart district in Amay. A major deployment was carried out on site with six fire engines and an ambulance, but also the police, the Commune and the PLANU (Emergency planning).
According to the first elements on the ground, the fire broke out in an annex which housed an incubator of 50 chicks. It was this incubator that caught fire in circumstances that will have to be determined. The annex contained many elements, objects and toxic products whose fumes quickly proved to be harmful.
In view of the risks of intoxication and in view of the wind which was blowing unstable, the PLANU, the mayor of Amay, Jean-Michel Javaux, and the police descended on the spot and initiated the communal pre-alert phase. It was decided to set up a security perimeter in the neighborhood. The Commune of Amay invited the population to hide in the houses. “The inhabitants of the district are invited to stay at home, doors and windows closed”, explained Jean-Michel Javaux. The police were also on site to manage and organize the “containment”. “We went through the streets with our vehicles and an intercom announcing the instructions, details the local police. The perimeter was drawn up in a triangle: the Thier Philippart district, rue Marchandise and rue de Sart. three police teams.”
Around 2 p.m., the situation already seemed under control. “Given the direction of the wind, towards the woods and the fields and the work of the firefighters to control the fire, we considered that the situation was under control. We will not go into the emergency phase.”
The security perimeter was finally lifted at 2:45 p.m. “The most complicated is over, underlines the mayor who confirms that the fire was important and that the firefighters were faced with many difficulties. They had a lot of work.”
Once the fire is completely under control, foam will be projected on the site and a specialized company will be responsible for evacuating the earth and rubble. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The rearing of chicks, on the other hand, did not survive. And the disaster is total for the annex. The house was not affected.
The Municipality of Amay also invites the forty houses located in the perimeter not to consume any harvest from their vegetable garden or fruit trees.
