Peacekeepers bereaved in Mali: An attack near Timbuktu, in the north of the country, resulted in the death of a peacekeeper, while four others were seriously injured on Friday June 9. Mali is weakened by the spread of jihadism and by various forms of violence, the UN Minusma mission said.
A patrol ‘was the target of a complex attack’ near Ber where it first hit a mine before coming under fire, reports Minusma on Twitterinformation confirmed to AFP by a spokesperson.
The “preliminary information” reports one death and four seriously injured, announced the Minusma. She did not specify the nationality of the blue helmets.
The Minusma, privileged target
Since 2012, Mali has been in the grip of a deep security crisis that started in the north and which has spread to the center of the country and to neighboring Burkina Faso and Niger. It is delivered to the abuses of armed groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State organization, but also to the violence of proclaimed self-defense groups, bandits and even regular forces.
The Minusma, with around 12,000 soldiers deployed, is a prime target for jihadists who target foreign presence and state symbols. Since its creation in 2013, 186 of its members have died in hostile acts. It is the UN mission that has suffered the most losses in the world in recent years.
