Urgent Energy Aid for Ukraine: Belgium Proposes Funds for Emergency Generators to Help Flood-Affected Areas

The consequences of this destruction are incalculable: millions of liters of water flow, villages and agricultural areas are flooded, drinking water is polluted,… The Nova Kakhovka hydroelectric power station was also destroyed. It supplied electricity to hundreds of thousands of families. Its destruction and the floods deprived three million families of electricity.

Faced with the urgency, confirmed by her Ukrainian counterpart German Galushchenko, Minister Van der Straeten will propose to the Council of Ministers on Friday to accelerate part of the planned energy aid.

On May 12, Vivaldi decided to release 4 million euros for urgent energy aid. The Minister wishes to make part of it available to B-FAST for the purchase of emergency generators. B-FAST is responsible for public procurement, logistics and transport, as well as the administrative, legal and budgetary control of this specific aid.

“Emergency generators are essential to keep hospitals running, but also to provide electricity to Ukrainian families and schools,” said Tinne Van der Straeten. “I immediately instructed my team to quickly make funds available to B-FAST to purchase emergency generators for the flood affected area. Up to 30 emergency generators can thus be acquired and delivered as soon as possible,” she added.

These generators will be added to the 135 generators that Belgium already delivered last year to help Ukrainian families get through the winter. Belgium has also provided the diesel and gasoline necessary for their operation.
