Unprecedented Forest Fires in Canada: Government Negligence or Climate Change?

Unprecedented fires for many years in Canada, which eat its forests east and west, have raised confusion and questions regarding the reasons for the Canadian government’s inability to control or limit them, although fires are a frequent occurrence in the country.

Officially described as “out of control”, the fires threatened infrastructure in Quebec further east.

Wildfires are common in Canada’s western territories, but this year the fires spread so quickly in the east of the country, making it the worst start to the fire season ever.

Why are fires recurring in Canada?

The fires in Canada opened a new discussion on social media regarding the reasons for the recurrence and even expansion of fires, and why they were not controlled by the government, and some accused them of not adhering to safety and security standards.

In this regard, the American researcher on political affairs, Mahdi Afifi, denies the government’s negligence in this matter, attributing the recurrence of fires in Canada, America and Africa to climate change and the accompanying rise in temperature.

He explained to “Sky News Arabia” that “when the dry branches rise, they ignite, resulting in large, frequent fires that are difficult to control, especially in areas with increasing drought, and despite that they are trying.”

Muhammad al-Yamani, an expert in international relations, disagrees with him, stressing the existence of negligence and negligence on the part of the Canadian government for two reasons.

The other reason is “non-compliance with safety standards,” noting that the government there “requires employees with experience and without experience in the field of safety and security.”

Officially, Emergency Preparedness Secretary Bill Blair announced Wednesday that some 9.4 million acres have burned, nearly 15 times more than the 10-year average.

With alarming numbers, he said that there are 414 burning fires across the country to date, 239 of which are classified as out of control, pointing to the existence of “continuing repercussions on important infrastructure in Quebec, such as closing roads and rural areas, interrupting communications, and threatening high-voltage power lines due to growing fires.

New York suffering

The dangers and effects of the fires extended from Canada to its neighbor, the United States, which changed the air in some of its regions, especially in New York, as a result of air pollution from fire fumes.

Afifi comments that it is “the first time that New York has suffered from air pollution in a long time, and government places and schools have closed, and even residents have been prevented from going out.”

For his part, al-Yemeni points out that the United States is suffering from the fires in its neighbor, and that it has previously stressed that the Canadian government must find a solution to these fires.

US President Joe Biden offered Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, during a phone call, Wednesday, help to put out the ′′ devastating and historic ′′ forest fires raging in Canada, the White House announced.

And the US presidency stated in a statement that Biden “has ordered his team to provide all federal firefighting capabilities that can quickly help put out the fires affecting Canadian and American communities.”
