Belgian Population Trends: Insights on Births, Deaths, and Migration in Wallonia and Beyond

The Belgian population was nearly 11.7 million on 1 January 2023

Conversely, for the second time since the Second World War, the Belgian statistics office observed a negative national natural balance. In other words, in 2022, there were more deaths than births in Belgium.

More deaths than births in Belgium in 2022, this is only the 2nd year that this has happened since the Second World War

But locally, what is the trend in recent months? Beginning of response over one year, ten years and 25 years thanks to the figures communicated by Statbel.

Daverdisse, the least populated municipality in Wallonia

Like Luxembourg, which is by far the least populated province of Wallonia, the district of Bastogne is the one with the fewest inhabitants. On January 1, 2023, only around 50,000 souls lived in the entities of Bastogne, Bertogne, Fauvillers, Gouvy, Houffalize, Sainte-Ode, Vaux-sur-Sûre and Vielsalm.

More locally, it is in Daverdisse, in the heart of the Belgian Ardennes, that we count the fewest inhabitants. Despite 7 new arrivals in 2022, the town still has “only” 1,415 residents year-round.

Among the other less populated localities in Wallonia, Statbel still points to Herbeumont (1,728), Martelange (2,003), Rouvroy (2,141) and Fauvillers (2,435).

Léglise, the strongest growth in 25 years

But if, overall, the municipalities of Luxembourg are among the least densely populated in the south of the country, it is clear that they are also those where the evolution of the population has been the most significant for 25 years. Example with Léglise (+58.55%) and Vaux-sur-Sûre (+51.42%), whose number of residents has more than doubled in a quarter of a century.

Another region, same trend: the east of Walloon Brabant has also seen its population explode since 1998. This is particularly the case in Mont-Saint-Guibert, Walhain, Incourt, Perwez and Hélécine, where the number of inhabitants has increased by more than 30% in 25 years.

Vresse-sur-Semois, the least attractive of the Walloon municipalities?

Another striking observation: Vresse-sur-Semois is having a hard time attracting new residents. Between January 1, 1998 and January 1, 2023, the border town lost 253 inhabitants, the equivalent of 9.17% of its population. And the situation does not necessarily improve over time since the trend has barely slowed down over the last decade (-7.29%).

But another similar trend has been emerging since 2013 in another region of Wallonia. Thus, in the vicinity of Spa, the Belgian statistics office observes an exodus of the local population. Pepinster has notably witnessed the departure of 466 inhabitants (-4.78%) in the space of ten years. To be seen if the figures will continue to fall in the coming years or if it is only a temporary lack of love, a consequence of the floods in the summer of 2021.
