RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das Clarifies: No Plans to Withdraw Rs 500 Notes or Re-Introduce Rs 1000 Notes

Mumbai: Reserve Bank Governor Shaktikanta Das says there is no plan to withdraw Rs 500 notes. It has not been decided to re-introduce Rs 1000 notes. The Governor of the Reserve Bank requested not to spread speculations in this regard.

“The Reserve Bank has no plans to withdraw Rs 500 notes or re-introduce Rs 1000 notes. Please don’t spread speculations,” said Shaktikanta Das.

RBI Governor informed that 50 percent of Rs 2000 notes have been returned. Of the total Rs 3.62 lakh crore worth Rs 2,000 notes, Rs 1.80 lakh crore notes were also returned. 85% of the returned notes came as bank deposits. The RBI Governor said that only the remaining ones have been transferred.

“No need to rush to exchange or deposit Rs 2,000 notes. We have notes for exchange. Don’t panic. But don’t wait till the last days of September,” said Shaktikanta Das.
