Mark Zuckerberg announced the arrival of channels in WhatsApp. A practical function to follow the news without leaving your conversations.

The best jams are made in other people’s pots. This is perhaps the saying of Mark Zuckerberg whose services have become masters in the art of taking over the best functions of competitors.

The latest example is undoubtedly the arrival of chat channels in WhatsApp, directly inherited from Telegram channels. A practical function that was missing from the Meta chat service.

The new News tab

According to WhatsApp, channels are a private way to follow all the topics that interest you: the news of your city, a football club or much more niche topics. Once subscribed to a channel of a company, a media or a group, you will be able to follow its news and trace the history of announcements up to 30 days back.

The developers have taken care to separate these new functions in a News tab well isolated from discussions and group conversations. It is also in this new tab that we will find the status updates of our contacts.

WhatsApp clarifies that a channel is a one-way chat channel. Like a TV channel, admins can post announcements and broadcast content, but subscribers can’t respond.

Deployment in the coming months

WhatsApp announces a launch initially in Colombia and Singapore. The deployment to the rest of the world will be done gradually, the time for the Meta teams to establish partnerships with organizations.

The developers list WHO, FC Barcelona and Manchester United as its first international partners on this feature.
