Not Jonas Vingegaard, but his Danish compatriot Mikkel Bjerg took over the lead jersey at the Criterium du Dauphine following the individual time trial. The three-time U23 World Champion from the UAE racing team won on Wednesday on the bumpy 31 km course from Cours to Belmont-de-la-Loire twelve seconds ahead of Vingegaard, who was second on the day and now also overall. It was the first professional win for 24-year-old Bjerg.
In the fight once morest the clock, Bjerg’s team colleague Felix Großschartner held up excellently in sixth place, and the state champion even improved to fifth place in the overall rankings. The Upper Austrian is 44 seconds behind Bjerg following halftime in the top-class World Tour race. Four more demanding stages follow until Sunday, the last two each have more than 4,000 meters in altitude. Numerous aces such as defending champion and jumbo captain Vingegaard contest the Dauphine as the last endurance test before the Tour de France.
