Union Activists Fight for Right to Strike in Legal Battle Against Delhaize Store and Belgian Authorities

The legal case is linked to a trade union action which had blocked the Delhaize store in Ledeberg at the beginning of May. A bailiff was then sent and several union activists were taken to the police station in handcuffs. The unions then filed a complaint.

“The sending of bailiffs with on-call duty, the police who act harshly or the handcuffing of activists to peaceful pickets… It is an attack on the fundamental right to strike and to action”, denounces Kristel Van Damme of the union ACV Puls, the equivalent of the French-speaking CNE. “Everyone might see it on our social networks: the intervention of the police and bailiffs at Delhaize was disproportionate and was intended only to intimidate.”

With this trial, the unions want to preserve the right to strike. They also point the finger at the “anti-thugs” bill of the Minister of Justice Vincent Van Quickenborne, which can lead to a ban on demonstrations. “It’s a worrying trend of increasingly strong and repressive measures once morest protest,” says Van Damme.
