Exposed: The Truth Behind Russian Claims of Tank Destruction in Ukraine Conflict

From the “ghost of kyiv”, which never existed, to the Russian strikes that destroyed Western equipment even before it was delivered to the Ukrainian forces, to the fanciful assessments [mais toujours à l’avantage de celui qui les avance], the war in Ukraine carries a lot of false information. Which of course comes as no surprise, the first two victims of an armed conflict, it is said, usually being the plan [et les Russes l’ont encore démontré à leurs dépens] and… the truth.

Be that as it may, in recent days, the Russian general staff has indicated that it has foiled an offensive by Ukrainian forces, inflicting significant losses on them. And to announce the destruction of 28 tanks, including 8 Leopard and 3 AMX-10RC [de conception française], as well as putting 1,500 Ukrainian soldiers out of action. What, for its part, kyiv has denied.

This state, and even if poor quality photographs suggested that AMX-10RC had indeed been neutralized [ou, du moins abandonnés], it is difficult to confirm the assessment put forward by Moscow for the moment. Before being sure, it is indeed necessary to be able to authenticate the images broadcast on social networks and other Telegram channels, to ensure that we are not dealing with special effects and geolocate, if possible, the where they were taken.

However, to support its claims, the Russian Ministry of Defense released a video purporting to show the destruction of a Leopard 2 tank by an attack helicopter [un Kamov Ka-52?]. The official Ria Novosti news agency, which distributed this documentwas more cautious, referring to a machine with a “characteristic silhouette of German-made combat vehicles”.

To tell the truth, and even if you think you can make out a cannon, the target vehicle does not look like anything known among German-made armored vehicles… And for good reason: it is not a Leopard 2 which was destroyed by a missile. anti-tank 9K121 Vikhr… but an agricultural machine that looks like a John Deere 4830 self-propelled sprayer. In any case, this is the conclusion reached by “Status-6”, a Twitter account specializing in intelligence in open sources.

If the string is big, it is probably not for a public unfamiliar with military matters, which is the target of this manipulation. It doesn’t matter that a disinformation operation [ou de propagande] whether elaborate or not: the main thing is that it be effective. And this apparently seeks to convince that the Russian forces are able to destroy the most recent equipment with which the Ukrainian army is equipped, at a time when it seems to have launched the counter-offensive announced several weeks ago.

That said, the Russian general staff is accustomed to the fact. “The Russians claimed to have hit more than [systèmes d’artillerie M142] HIMARS than we have sent”, had thus quipped an American official, quoted by the Washington Post.

Even Yevgeny Progozhin, the leader of the paramilitary group Wagner, took offense at the latest assessment of the fighting put forward by the spokesman for the Russian Ministry of Defense. “It’s just rantings,” he quipped via Telegram. “In fact, why not add up all the numbers given by Konashenkov. I think we have already destroyed the whole of planet Earth five times,” he concluded.
