Seventh-seeded Anas Jaber’s hopes of becoming the first Arab and African to win the singles title in a major tennis tournament evaporated, following her defeat, Wednesday, 3-6, 7-6, 6-1 by Brazilian Beatrice Haddad Maya, in the quarter-finals of the French Open.

Tunisia’s Anas was chasing a third major semi-final in less than a year, but her hopes were dashed by the left-handed 14th seed, who fought valiantly to reach her first major semi-final.

Haddad Maya became the first Brazilian woman since Maria Bueno in 1968 to reach the semi-finals in a major tournament, and the first player from her country to advance to the semi-finals in “Roland Garros” since the beginning of the professional era.
