Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard Resigns to Compete Equally in Mexico’s Presidential Race: Updates and Analysis

As he said in a speech next to his closest team, the resignation will be effective as of June 12.

Since December, Ebrard proposed to the leadership of President López Obrador’s party various provisions to choose the presidential candidate, among them, that the interested parties resign their respective positions to compete on equal terms.

During the announcement of his resignation, which occurred just one day following the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, met with the presidential hopefuls and Morenista governors, the still foreign minister affirmed that he will work to give continuity to the political project of the Mexican president .

“Thanks to the transformation process that I have experienced, with the privilege of accompanying the president [Andrés Manuel] López Obrador, today we can ask ourselves that Mexico reaches its greatness”, declared the Secretary of Foreign Affairs.

His closest political rivals within the Morena party are Claudia SheinbaumHead of Government of Mexico City, and Adam Augusto Lopez, Federal Secretary of the Interior. Both have declared that they intend to reach the National Palace next year.
