Pope Francis will be operated today at the Gemelli hospital in Rome for risk of intestinal obstruction and will have to be hospitalized for several days, the Vatican reported.
“At the end of the General Audience, the Pope will travel to the University Hospital, where in the early followingnoon will be submitted under general anesthesia to a surgical intervention of laparotomy and plastic surgery of the abdominal wall with prosthesis”, indicated the Holy See in a statement.
The Vatican explained that “the operation, arranged in recent days by the medical team assisting the Pope, has become necessary because of a incarcerated incisional hernia causing recurrent, painful and worsening subocclusive syndromes”.
The 86-year-old pontiff, “will be admitted for several days to allow the normal postoperative course and full functional recovery,” added the Holy See.
The operation has been considered urgent following the results of the CT scan that he underwent this Tuesday and occurs following the colon intervention in July 2021.
