WASHINGTON — Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie announced Tuesday that he will run for president in New Hampshire. He launched his second bid for the White House and set up another showdown with former President Donald Trump.
Former US President Donald Trump’s supporter Chris Christie is now a staunch critic of Trump. Christie has come to the election platform with the declaration that he alone has the skills and willingness to directly attack Trump. Christie was an adviser to Trump’s campaign during the 2016 presidential election. Christie did not agree with Trump’s claim that Biden had sabotaged the 2020 presidential election. Christie isn’t doing much better in opinion polls in the Republican primary. He received the support of only 1% of voters in a May Archyde.com poll. Trump received 49% of the vote, compared to 19% for his main rival, Ron DeSantis.
Christie was first elected governor of New Jersey in 2009. Democratic candidate John Corzine was kicked out. He easily won re-election in 2013. He served as the US Attorney for New Jersey from 2002 to 2008. During this period he also successfully prosecuted the father of Trump’s son-in-law and former aide, Jared Kushner, for criminal tax evasion.
Christie himself was mired in the “Bridgegate” scandal in his second term as governor. The George Washington Bridge lane closure in September 2013 was allegedly a political vendetta following the city’s Democratic mayor refused to endorse Christie’s gubernatorial bid, causing massive traffic jams. A federal investigation also found that Christie had no knowledge of the decision to close the lanes.
Christie ran for president in 2016, but dropped out of the race following a disappointing showing in the New Hampshire primary and became the first major party figure to back Trump.
