Cambridge University researchers presented a robot “chef” kitchen robot that can recreate recipes by analyzing cooking videos. This type of robot is not new, as Toyota demonstrated something similar in 2020, but the equipment’s capacity draws attention.
In this case, eight different recipes for the robot were displayed in video format. In that sense, he was able to do the analysis and identified the recipes correctly 93% of the time. In the same way, he had the ability to make all the movements necessary to execute the recipes in 83% of the actions.
Each frame of the videos was analyzed through the networks OpenPose e YOLOv5m so that it was possible to identify the hands of the cook, as well as the ingredients and utensils needed to make each of the recipes. A video of just over a minute was released to show the equipment in action.
Despite the recipes not being complex, the robot was even able to identify when a larger portion of an ingredient was needed and furthermore classified small variations as human error. However, it is worth mentioning that the researchers filmed themselves in the actions and did not use elaborate transition effects in the videos.
In any case, scientists claim that in the future, robots of this type will be able to follow recipe tutorials in videos on Youtube or TikTok. So, it is not just in medicine that we will have equipment of this type working to assist in certain tasks.
