The first cases became known on May 25th, since then several children with bloody diarrhea have come to the outpatient clinic of the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine at Feldkirch Regional Hospital. Some of the children developed a so-called hemolytic-uremic syndrome as a complication, which can lead to acute kidney failure. Small children and children up to the age of five are particularly affected by this complication, and this complication occurs less frequently from the age of five, it said. Four of the children are being treated as inpatients at the Feldkirch State Hospital and two more at the Innsbruck University Hospital, the State Medical Directorate informed on Tuesday. Four of the children – two each in Vorarlberg and Tyrol – are being cared for in intensive care to prevent kidney failure.
