[오피니언뉴스=최인철 기자] Apple, the maker of the iPhone, unveiled a mixed reality (MR) headset on the 5th.

Apple held its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) at Apple Park in Cupertino, California, and introduced the MR headset ‘Vision Pro’.

The MR headset is Apple’s first ambitious product in nine years since the Apple Watch, which was first unveiled in 2014. It is known that more than 1000 developers have been developing it for over 8 years.

MR is a technology that allows interaction between reality and virtual reality as an extension of augmented reality (AR), in which three-dimensional virtual objects are superimposed on the real world.

It means that the computing functions that have been done in computers and iPhones can be implemented in a three-dimensional (3D) space through ‘Vision Pro’.

CEO Tim Cook said, “Augmented Reality (AR) is a highly deep technology that allows digital content to blend into the real world,” adding, “It is a completely new AR platform.”

‘Vision Pro’ in the form of ski goggles has a new operating system, Vision OS, equipped with a camera and sensor so that users can operate the device through their eyes, hands, and voice. It has access to hundreds of thousands of existing iPhone and iPad apps that run automatically, seamlessly blending digital content with the physical world.

If you wear ‘Vision Pro’ and make a facetime call, the user’s appearance is reproduced digitally in life size, and the user’s facial expression and hand gestures are reflected in real time. Users can watch a movie together, browse photos, or collaborate on a presentation.

When watching a movie, the screen is expanded as wide as 100 feet (30 m), so you can feel the atmosphere of a private movie theater equipped with a state-of-the-art spatial sound system.

When you access your photo library in iCloud, you can experience photos and videos in full-size, vibrant colors, with even the smallest details.

The Vision Pro will be sold in the US for $3,499 (regarding 4.56 million won) from early next year, and will expand to other countries. The external battery lasts up to 2 hours.

CEO Cook emphasized, “Just as the Mac opened the era of personal computers and the iPhone opened the era of mobile computing, the ‘Apple Vision Pro’ introduces spatial computing.”

Along with the release of the MR headset, Apple announced that it would work with Disney to use Disney+’s streaming service and collaborate with game development engine company Unity to develop 3D apps.

Apple also introduced a new laptop MacBook Air with a thickness of 11.5 mm and a size of 15 inches with its own M2 chip. In addition, it unveiled a new system-on-a-chip (SoC) M2 Ultra that completes the M2 chip lineup and announced that it was installed in the computer main body, Mac Studio and Mac Pro.

NameDrop, which allows users to easily share contact information by simply bringing their iPhones close to each other or bringing their iPhones and Apple Watches close to each other, Checkin, which shares real-time locations when acquaintances return home, and keeps a diary through photos, etc. It also unveiled upgraded iOS 17 features, such as the Journal app that helps you write.
