The Columbus Blue Jackets have acquired Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Ivan Provorov in a trade that also involves the Los Angeles Kings.

The Russian headed to Ohio from Philadelphia, as did fullback Kevin Connauton. According to The Fourth Period, Los Angeles will pay 30% of Provorov’s salary, which is slated for $6.75 million in each of the next two seasons.

Also, the Flyers will get another player for their defensive squad, Sean Walker, who totaled 13 points in 70 games with the Kings in 2022-2023. Additionally, prospect Helge Grans, a first-round pick, and goaltender Cal Petersen were offloaded to the Flyers, opening the door for a possible departure of Carter Hart; moreover, some sources have specified that the Pennsylvania club is working in this direction, even if nothing is sealed yet.

At the Kings, general manager Rob Blake will have more leeway on his mass to grant a new contract to Vladislav Gavrikov, eligible for full autonomy following completing a three-year, $8.4 million deal. Petersen, for his part, will represent an impact of $5 million in 2023-2024.

Going back to Provorov, he drew attention during the last campaign for his refusal to wear a diversity and inclusion awareness shirt during a warm-up session. Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen doesn’t seem to mind the disapproving comments of a few, as according to TSN he is set to confirm the arrival of head coach Mike Babcock, previously criticized for his methods of work considered archaic and its verbal abuse towards the players.

Briere at work

Thus, the GM of the Flyers, Daniel Brière, who recently won his position on a permanent basis, began to draw. He let go of a distraction in Provorov, author of 27 points in 82 games last season, while finding another alternative in net. Indeed, the organization has been reviled time and time once more for its inability to have a reliable No. 1 goaltender, and Hart has struggled in the most recent three campaigns.

The 24-year-old put in some promising performances in his first two years of his career, but since then he’s been unable to hit a .910 save percentage. Nevertheless, his performance in 2022-2023 was slightly better than the previous one, as he maintained a rate of .907 and a goals once morest average of 2.94.

For his part, Petersen took part in 10 meetings in Los Angeles last season and won five of them. On the other hand, Brière has already highlighted the presence of several hopefuls in the goaltending position in his organization, namely Felix Sandstrom, Ivan Fedotov, Alexei Kolosov and Samuel Ersson. For this reason, he had mentioned the possible departure of Hart during an interview with the radio station 94.1 WIP at the end of May.
