Cortana, an intelligent personal assistant like Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa, was launched in 2015 with the Windows 10 operating system.
This tool allows you to schedule reminders, open applications and ask questions, all using voice commands.
However, the announcement of the end of its support by Microsoft is not a surprise: this productivity assistant has been gradually removed from the Windows interface in recent years, starting with the closure, in 2020, of the Cortana app on iOS and Android.
Since that time, the virtual assistant no longer responds to requests made with Microsoft Surface headphones, among others.
The launch of the Windows 11 operating system in October 2021, for its part, coincided with the removal of its prominent place in the desktop taskbar.
AI takes its place
It seems that the hour has come for the digital assistant, a fatal blow that can be attributed in particular to advances in artificial intelligence (AI), which make Cortana obsolete.
Microsoft has invested billions of dollars in the start-up OpenAI, which signs the chatbot ChatGPT. The company also announced in recent weeks its productivity tool Copilot, whose AI-powered utilities – summarizing content, rewriting text, adjusting computer settings, etc. — make Cortana blush.
The IT giant hasn’t said when Cortana will be retired from Windows, but the company says the assistant will remain offered in Outlook Mobile and Microsoft Teams for the time being.
