Thirteen countries have submitted formal applications to join the BRICS group, and six others have done so informally. Since then, the response of this group, which brings together Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, has been eagerly awaited.

The enlargement of the BRICS group was thus included on the agenda of the Summit of this coalition of emerging economies, which was held on 2 and 3 June in South Africa. And the answer came at the end of this meeting. According to the South African Minister for International Relations and Cooperation, Naledi Pandor, the BRICS countries are not yet ready to accept new members.

Speaking at a press conference of BRICS foreign ministers in Cape Town, Pandor said that “once we have a document that offers clear guidance, we will present it to the Summit scheduled for August” in Africa from South. “We would like this work to be completed by the time the Summit takes place,” she added.

China seems to contradict Naledi Pandor

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said China supports the BRICS enlargement process and is ready to accept new like-minded partners into the group.

As an important platform for cooperation between emerging markets and developing countries, the BRICS are determined to uphold multilateralism, vigorously advance the reform of the global governance system and increase the representation and weight of emerging markets and developing countries, Mao said.

She added that “BRICS have become a positive, stable and constructive force in international affairs,” noting that China has always viewed BRICS as an open and inclusive mechanism and supports the group’s enlargement process.
