Near the Italian city of Mantua, Alessandro Biancardi was able to pull the largest catfish ever caught from the river Po. the 43 year old, who has been fishing for 35 years, usually catches zander and carp – but also catfish. On the Catch the record fish he himself was most surprised.
Biancardi had known regarding catfish for 23 years, but had never caught it. That changed in the Pentecost week when he went fishing with his boat near the village of Revere regarding 35 kilometers east of his hometown, as reported by the “Frankfurter Rundschau”. The Italian had to fight the animal for a full 43 minutes.
“When he first showed up, I really realized I had a monster on my hook. The adrenaline was soaring and the fear of losing him almost made me panic,” Biancardi recalled in a Facebook post. Eventually the catfish was exhausted and the fisherman was able to bring the animal ashore using the so-called catfish grip – the fisherman grabs the fish’s robust lower jaw and uses it as a handle.
This was followed by the extensive documentation of the catch of the century with photos and videos. Of course, the catch also had to be measured: With a length of 285 cm, the catfish surpassed the previous world record by four cm. Instead of slaughtering and eating the fish, Biancardi ended up releasing the giant catfish back into the river. Old catfish are not really edible anyway, the passionate angler explains.
