Former US Vice President Mike Pence has submitted the documents for a presidential bid in 2024. The former deputy to ex-President Donald Trump submitted the official “declaration of candidacy” to the Federal Elections Commission in Washington on Monday, according to the agency’s website. The archconservative is expected to officially announce his bid for the Republican presidential nomination on Wednesday in the US state of Iowa.

The 63-year-old, who turns 64 on Wednesday, is challenging his former boss Trump in the competition for the party’s nomination. Pence has been considering a presidential bid for some time.

Polls on the Republican field of candidates currently see the former governor of the US state of Indiana in third place, a long way behind Trump and Florida governor Ron DeSantis. According to the specialist website FiveThirtyEight, the evangelical Christian and anti-abortion opponent currently has an average of 5.4 percent in the survey. Trump comes to around 54 percent and DeSantis to around 21 percent.

Pence was a loyal deputy to Trump from 2017 to 2021 in the White House. The storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021, during which rampaging Trump supporters shouted “Hang Mike Pence”, among other things, led to a break between the two Republicans.

At the time, Pence refused to stop Congress from certifying Democrat Joe Biden’s victory in the November 2020 presidential election, as requested by Trump. He became the target of angry attacks by Trump.

“His reckless words put my family and everyone in the Capitol in danger that day,” Pence said of Trump in March. “And I know history will hold Donald Trump accountable.”

Trump announced last November that he wanted to retake the White House in the November 2024 presidential election. In the months that followed, former US ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, African-American Senator Tim Scott, former governor of the southern state of Arkansas Asa Hutchinson, and then, in May, Florida governor DeSantis, all joined.

The Republican primaries for the November 2024 presidential election will begin early next year, traditionally starting in the US state of Iowa in the Midwest. The Republican primary winner will challenge President Biden, who is running for re-election.
