The Federal Mint Swissmint launches a new coin to commemorate 175 years of modern Switzerland. Federal Councilor Karin Keller-Sutter presented the currency on Monday, which will be available for purchase in gold or silver from July 1.
The preamble to the Constitution appears on the obverse of the coin, while two angels bearing the Swiss coat of arms are depicted on the reverse. In light of the debate aroused by the reference to God in the Constitution, the author of the coinage, the artist from Olten Peter Salzmann, indicates in a press release that he has represented one of the wingless angels.

The Head of the Federal Department of Finance (FDF), Karin Keller-Sutter, presented this new currency on Monday entitled “175 years of the Federal Constitution”. She described this text of September 12, 1848 as a “real stroke of genius” which laid the institutional foundations of modern Switzerland still in force today.
The silver coin with a face value of 20 francs will notably be printed in 10,000 copies not put into circulation. Its gold counterpart, the mintage of which will comprise 5,000 pieces in burnished flan quality, is worth 50 francs.
The commemorative coin will go on sale at the Bernerhof, headquarters of the FDF, during the open doors of the Federal Bern on July 1 and 2.
The Federal Mint Swissmint is the official institute responsible for issuing current and commemorative coins. It launched at least four special pieces last year, notably on watchmaking and renewable energies.
