The shares of the presidential candidate Jihad Azour began to rise with the opposition officially announcing his candidacy, hours following the head of the Free Patriotic Movement, Representative Gebran Bassil, announced that he had reached an agreement with it, but what might increase Azour’s chances more is the meeting of the “Democratic Gathering” bloc next Thursday. It was also announced by Representative Bilal Abdullah to the “Lebanon Debate”.
Member of the “Democratic Gathering”, Representative Abdullah, explains in his speech, “With the basic principle, we were the first to nominate the former minister, Jihad Azour, and we were convinced that Azour is a consensual candidate. Since the beginning of the elections, we have tried to seek a consensual system in the country because the scale of the crisis and collapse in Lebanon needs consensus. There are regional variables that need to be taken into account outside of the realm of people.”
Is it possible that the meeting proceeds with Azour as a challenging candidate? He points out that “Azour was in the basket of names that we put forward for consensus, and as for the issue of the challenge, the course of events, alliances, and intersection turned him into a challenging candidate, and the second party is required to reconsider its accounts and take a step towards a settlement, in addition to the fact that the Free Patriotic Movement joined the segment that was voting for Representative Michel Previously compensated is a radical change.”
And he adds, “What is required is a minimum agreement, and Azour constitutes for us a road map to save the country, given his international relations, expertise and experiences. We are talking regarding the political map, not people, because our position is not linked to people, but rather to the interest of the country.”
And regarding their choice in the session called for by Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri? Abdullah says, “Thank you, President Nabih Berri, because it is natural for this to happen. We will meet on Thursday and discuss the issue, and the head of the Democratic Gathering, Representative Taymour, will take the appropriate decision.”
And he affirms that “the democratic meeting is closer to the option of consensus, and he believes that there is a possibility of agreement on Azour, but this issue needs to open a dialogue and raise and concede on the part of the rest, including the Hezbollah team,” stressing that “we cannot continue in this division that will not produce President because the country no longer holds.”
