For France Gaz, certain government measures unveiled last May as part of ecological planning are worrying and send “contradictory signals” to the French.
Support for the development of renewable gases, massive electrification of uses, measures to ban gas boilers in housing… For France Gaz, the government’s recent announcements to accelerate the decarbonization of France by 2030 send “signals contradictory”. While the gas industry welcomes the ambition displayed by the government, “the place given to gas solutions and innovations in the renewable gas sector might be further amplified to achieve this objective more quickly”, indicates Jean-Marc Leroy, the president of France Gaz, in a press release issued on June 1, 2023.
A target of 20% renewable gas by 2030
For the gas sector, the regulatory measures announced by the Minister for Energy Transition, in particular those relating to the purchase price for the production of biomethane, are encouraging for reviving the dynamics of project development. Nevertheless, France Gaz wants to go beyond the 15% of renewable gas set by the government and is aiming for a target of 20% in 2030.
To achieve this objective, the sector expects more recognition and support from the innovative sectors of pyrogasification, hydrothermal gasification and methanation. As part of the climate energy programming law, France Gaz wishes to include the waste deposits, recoverable by these sectors, in the carbon-free energy mix scenarios for 2050.
“Worrying signals with the shutdown of gas boilers”
On May 22, during the presentation of sectoral decarbonization targets for 2030, Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne indicated that she wanted to reduce the share of heating in buildings. But for the gas industry, this reduction clearly indicates the intention to announce the end of gas boilers in housing, even for homes wishing to use renewable gases.
Recalling the costs associated with energy renovation work and the increase in electricity prices, the impact of such measures is not without consequence on the purchasing power and the daily life of the French, in particular in the absence alternatives for people living in rural areas or in collective housing, warns the sector.
In addition, the “too rapid electrification of the heating stock” represents a risk for the sustainability of the electricity networks in winter. “The public authorities must not underestimate the role of gas in the management of the energy peak, and maintain a balanced vision of the energy mix”, believes France Gaz.
Proposals to support the development of biogas
Participating in the various working groups of the climate energy programming law, France Gaz therefore intends to defend the interests of the sector. It thus proposes to:
- Support and accelerate the development of all renewable and low-carbon energies;
- Prioritize a balanced approach, reconciling energy transition and the resilience of the energy system;
- Retain the possibility of using gas solutions in the absence of an alternative solution, such as the hybrid Pac and very high performance boilers;
- Encourage households to use green gases to supply their equipment.
