LH Mikl-Leitner: Successful EU initiative DiscoverEU enjoys great popularity in Lower Austria

St.Pölten (OTS) 180 young people from Lower Austria were accepted by the European Commission in the eighth application round of the DiscoverEU initiative for the coveted Interrail tickets. Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner is enthusiastic regarding the action of the European Commission: “Giving young people the chance to travel to all countries of the European Union by train completely free of charge is great. In this way young people live the European identity and get to know and appreciate our European values.”

Harather Florentina from southern Lower Austria is one of the 180 young people who won an Interrail ticket. “I found out regarding the initiative from my school and I was very enthusiastic regarding the idea last year, since many young people in particular want to travel following their high school exams to get to know new people and cultures. The initiative makes it easier to get started and is also financial help, which I would be very happy to take advantage of.” Her plans are drawing her north to go on beautiful Scandinavian city tours – because otherwise you always end up in the warm south. Her plans aren’t finalized yet, but she’s really looking forward to it, emphasizes the young woman from Lower Austria.

DiscoverEU is an initiative of the European Union and enables young people to travel Europe by train for free. The eighth application round took place in March of this year. In Austria, 3,297 young adults applied, Interrail tickets were awarded to 705 young people, 180 of whom went to Lower Austria in this application round. The winners now have the opportunity to travel the EU for 30 days between June 15, 2023 and September 30, 2024. Winners can also look forward to a DiscoverEU youth card with discounts on cultural visits, learning activities and sport.

“The EU campaign has great added value for Lower Austria, because since the initiative was founded in summer 2018, the European Commission has already been able to award 1,010 Interrail tickets to young people from Lower Austria in a total of eight application rounds. The idea of traveling Europe by train is anchored in many young people. This campaign makes it possible to bring the idea to life,” says Mikl-Leitner happily.
