It is said to be the most important meal… And this might be even more the case for people with type 2 diabetes: breakfast! According to a study published in the journal The American Journal of Clinical Nutritionreducing carbohydrate intake at breakfast might be beneficial for patients with this condition as it would help them better control their blood sugar levels during the rest of the day.
A breakfast low in carbohydrates but high in protein and fat
The breakfast favored by scientists should be low in carbohydrates but higher in protein and fat, such as eggs or cheese. “We’re not talking regarding a complete overhaul of the power supplyexplains Dr. Barbara Oliveira, in a communiqué. One of the many complications for people with type 2 diabetes is a rapid or large rise in blood sugar following a meal. Our research indicates that a low-carb meal in the morning appears to help control blood sugar levels throughout the day. We have [aussi] observed that a first meal of the day low in carbohydrates and high in protein and fat might limit hyperglycemic fluctuations.“
To achieve this result, the researchers conducted their work on 121 participants divided into two groups. For 12 weeks, the first group had low carbohydrate breakfasts (specifically 8 grams (g) of carbohydrates, 25 g of protein and 37 g of fat), while the second low amounts of fat but more carbs in the morning (56g carbs, 20g protein, and 15g fat). In both groups, the breakfasts provided 450 calories for each participant.
Better control of type 2 diabetes with a low-carb breakfast
Using a continuous blood glucose monitoring device and blood tests, the researchers were able to track the participants’ blood sugar levels. Their weight and waist circumference were also recorded at the start and end of the study.
Results: People in the first group had a reduction in their blood sugar, their blood sugar fluctuation, and their daytime glucose levels. Some were even able to reduce the medications they were taking. Researchers therefore believe that a low-carb breakfast can stabilize blood sugar levels throughout the day. On the other hand, no change was observed in weight and waist circumference.
At the same time, the scientists also observed that, naturally, the participants in the first group consumed fewer calories and carbohydrates at lunch and during the rest of the day. They therefore indicate that a breakfast high in fat and protein, although low in carbohydrates, can have an impact on daily eating habits.
