Each month, Europe 1 in partnership with Circana looks back on food inflation, through its sample basket, which includes 12 everyday products from major brands or private labels such as rice, eggs or even laundry. Objective, follow the rise in prices. What should be remembered in May is the stability of the basket.
Europe 1 reveals to you this Monday its inflation basket for the month of May. The Europe 1 basket, in partnership with the panelist Circana, is a selection of 12 food and hygiene products to try to give a concrete idea of the price increase. The Europe 1 basket is stable for the month of May, a stability that is confirmed month following month. Since March, the price of the Europe 1 basket has hardly changed. At 57 euros and 49 cents in May, it is 9 cents cheaper than in April, only 26 cents more expensive than in March.
Distributors are making efforts
This plateau can be explained in several ways. First of all, it is the success of the anti-inflation measures of the quarter. The prices of private label products are stable. Our partner Circana is also observing a strategy of lowering prices at certain brands to cope with the drop in sales volumes.
And then, in the same way, the distributors chose to smooth the price increase expected following the commercial negotiations. Prices did not climb 10% month-on-month as feared. That being said, the Europe 1 basket is stabilizing at a high level. Over one year, it increased by 21.5%, or just over 10 euros.
