After the very successful debut in the international GT Open series in Portimao, Portugal, the Kirchberger GT3 Team Eastalent Racing traveled to Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium for the second round of the championship. It turned out that the Austrians obviously have a special knack for the Ardennes roller coaster. As the two drivers Simon Reicher and Christopher Haase confirmed, the 7,004 meter long circuit suited the Audi R8 LMS evo II.
The specialty of this weekend was the endurance mode. This means that both drivers do qualifying, their respective best lap times are added up and then divided by two. The result then forms the starting grid for the race on Sunday, which is driven over two hours, 20 minutes and one lap. Three mandatory stops must be completed, which means that each driver has to take turns driving twice 35 minutes.
After pole position and second place in the race, the Eastalent pilots were rather self-critical. Simon Reicher: “I can’t really be happy because we had an extremely difficult race. Above all, we were lucky that our tires held out. Nevertheless, second place and the double points for the championship are wonderful. All in all, we can say Pat on the back for the race. We did a good job. But now we have to see how we can optimize the performance at the Hungaroring and in Paul Ricard. We have to sort ourselves out over the next few weeks and complete a tight test program.” The young man from the Innviertel region explains the tire issue: “I can’t tell from the outside whether the other participants also had problems with their tires. But I know for sure that the tires are our weak point. We have to work on that.”
His teammate Christopher Haase analyzed the race weekend in a very similar way. “Viewed from the outside, we can be very satisfied with the weekend. The pole position and second place in the multi-race are a strong achievement for all of us. As a driver, I was very satisfied with qualifying. The tire issue occupied us more than we imagined it. There’s still a bit of work to do. Under the circumstances, we made the most of the weekend.”
For the Austrians, it’s already a week from now – from 16th to 18th June – to the Hungaroring in Hungary. There they want to bring in the next championship points.
