The disaster scenario of three simultaneous strikes in Hollywood will not take place. Major US studios reached a tentative agreement over the weekend with one of the main unions representing film and TV directors.

This compromise, unveiled on Saturday evening following three weeks of negotiation, provides, among other things, for an improvement in the remuneration of directors, in particular for productions intended for “streaming” platforms, as well as safeguards concerning the use of artificial intelligence. .

If the fear of a total shutdown of productions is receding, the strike continues on the other hand among the screenwriters who are entering their second month of mobilization and negotiations must open this Wednesday with the profession of actors.

Historic agreement

“We have reached a truly historic agreement,” said Jon Avnet, chairman of the negotiations committee of the Directors Guild of America (DGA), which has 19,000 members.

According to a press release issued by the union, the contract provides, among other things, for an increase in remuneration but also for a revaluation of copyright from streaming.

The text, which has yet to be officially validated, will be scrutinized by the entire profession. In recent weeks, several studio executives have expressed hope that it will serve as the template for similar agreements with writers and actors.

Second month of strike among screenwriters

However, no discussion is on the agenda between the body that negotiates for the studios, the Alliance of Film and Television Producers, and the Writers Guild of America, the powerful union that represents screenwriters, on strike. since May 2.

The latter are asking for an increase in their income, in particular on streaming platforms. They feel that their wages are stagnating or even falling given inflation, while their role has become increasingly crucial.

For their part, streaming platforms claim to be forced to cut spending. After a period of strong growth, marked by massive investments in content to recruit new subscribers, the sector says it is under pressure from investors to achieve profitability.
