(CNN) – US warplanes were mobilized Sunday in response to a plane that ended up crashing in southwestern Virginia, according to a US official.
It is not clear if the aircraft violated restricted airspace near the city of Washington or if an emergency occurred on board.
The US military plane caused a sonic boom that was heard throughout the Washington region.
CNN previously reported that a Cessna Citation crashed in southwestern Virginia on Sunday followingnoon, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The plane, a Cessna Citation, took off from Elizabethton Municipal Airport (Tennessee) and was heading to MacArthur Airport on Long Island (New York).
The plane crashed into mountainous terrain in a “sparsely populated area,” according to the FAA.
A loud bang was heard throughout the Washington metropolitan area and surrounding areas, according to multiple government agencies.
“We are aware of reports from communities throughout the National Capital Region of a strong ‘boom’ this followingnoon,” Washington City Homeland Security and Emergency Management said in a tweet.
There is no threat at this time, according to the agency.
According to a tweet from the City of Annapolis Office of Emergency Management, the sound “was caused by an authorized Department of Defense flight. This flight caused a sonic boom.”
