The commander of the Rapid Support Forces in Sudan, Muhammad Hamdan Dagalo (Hamedti), confirmed today, Sunday, that he confirmed, in a call with the Saudi Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, his support for the Jeddah platform and his commitment to declaring the protection of civilians and facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid.
Daglo added in a statement that he discussed with the Saudi foreign minister the situation in Sudan and mediation efforts.
He added, “We also exchanged views on the latest developments in the country, and stressed the importance of coordination and intensification of joint efforts in order to achieve stability in our country.”
And both Saudi Arabia and the United States announced, in a joint statement earlier this month (June 1, 2023), the suspension of the Jeddah talks between the two parties to the ongoing conflict in Sudan since mid-April, due to the repeated “grave violations” of the ceasefire by both the army and the Rapid Support Forces.
However, they affirmed at the same time their readiness to resume dialogue if the two parties implement “the necessary steps to build confidence.”
Since the outbreak of bloody fighting between the conflicting parties in the country, in mid-April, the country has witnessed more than 12 truces, but they were all violated, amid an escalating death toll and growing humanitarian needs.
This prompted Riyadh and Washington last month to sponsor talks between representatives of the army and Rapid Support in the city of Jeddah in order to pave the way for reaching a permanent truce that facilitates the arrival of humanitarian aid and protects civilians, in preparation for launching a political dialogue at a later time that leads to a solution to the Sudanese crisis.
