Vitamin D3 and Cancer Mortality: Discoveries and Dosages for Effective Reduction

The German Cancer Research Center DKFZ has carefully evaluated 14 scientific studies of the highest quality in order to explore the influence of vitamin D3 on cancer mortality. At first it seemed like there was no connection, but then the researchers made a discovery.

Vitamin D reduces cancer mortality

Daily lower dosage gave a significant effect

A total of almost 105,000 subjects took part in the studies evaluated by the DKFZ. At first it seemed relatively irrelevant whether people with cancer were getting vitamin D3 or not, but then the researchers took a closer look at the dosage. One study participant received a low daily dose, another time rare but high single doses. Therein lay the difference! The four single-dose studies showed no effect on mortality. In the summary of the ten studies with daily vitamin D3 administration, there was a significant reduction of twelve percent.

However, none of the studies mentioned previously tested whether the subjects actually had a vitamin D deficiency. The untargeted administration suggests that the effect on deficiency patients is even greater. D3 contributes to the formation of the hormone 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, which is permanently available through regular supplementation. This hormone is highly likely to inhibit tumor growth.

Pronounced deficiency in regarding 15 percent of adults

About 15 percent of adults have a pronounced vitamin D deficiency. A study with colorectal cancer patients found a deficiency in 59 percent of the participants – and those with a poor prognosis were mostly there: These values ​​also say a lot. Taking vitamin D3 probably does not protect once morest cancer, but it does reduce the risk of dying from it. The vitamin seems to be particularly effective when people take it before the onset of the disease. In addition, over 70-year-olds obviously benefit the most from targeted nutritional supplements.

If you want to take vitamin D3 now, you should definitely observe the dosage recommendations and, if in doubt, consult your doctor. Hermann Brenner, a prevention expert at the DKFZ, says: “Regular intake of low doses is associated with almost negligible risk and very low costs.” In the studies mentioned, the low daily dose was 400 to 4000 IU per day, the high monthly single dose reached 60,000 to 120,000 IU.
