Sport et Tourisme.fr gives an overview of the nine iconic cycle routes in Flanders. After the Art Cities RouteAfter the Brussels green belt and the Route du Littoral, here is this week the Route de la Meuse which over more than 80 km reveals a beautiful landscape made up of endless banks and historic villages.
Flanders is a real land of cycle tourism. Not less than nine iconic cycle routes mesh the territory. Each of them connects the most beautiful landscapes of Flanders via very pleasant cycle paths which revolve around a central theme.
The Route de la Meuse is also worth taking by bike. You must first know that this route part of EuroVelo 19 and the international cycle route of the Meuse, allowing you to discover the river from its source to its mouth crossing Europe, i.e. a little over 1,000 kilometers spread over three countries (France, Belgium and the Netherlands).
Passage through Oud-Rekem, “the most beautiful village in Flanders”
If we dwell on the Belgian part and in particular Flanders, we are certain of confronting exceptional sites. Good guides are happy to mention dozens of kilometers of historic villages and endless shores. On the dike, we do not see the slightest caronly picturesque places like the place du marché de Maaseik et Oud-Rekem in the province of Limburg, designated in 2008 “most beautiful village of Flanders”. It is true that coming here is like a back to medieval times. Crossed by the Willems Sud canal, the town center is notably dominated by the Aspremont-Lynden water tower in whose shade it is good to rest. The church-museum, the pharmacy museum, the Senden distillery are also worth a visit. Not far from here is the Oude Weerd nature reserve (Nature Point).
Soothing river, sovereign nature and historic sites
After a first day in complete relaxation, it is time the next day to get back on your mount to complete the second part of the Route de la Meuse in Flanders. From the magnificent castle of Aspremont-Lynden, we pedal in the middle of nature towards Maas Landchap puis Waterburcht Piertersheim. You can admire here the ruins of a 12th century fortified castle. An observation platform allows you to enjoy a nice view of the surrounding park.
Barely 10 kilometers further on emerges Le Pont de Vroenhoven, a place photographed. A place steeped in history also because it was here that the Second World War broke out in Belgium on May 10, 1940. The second day can end at the level of the Kanne Caves which offer a dive into the Stone Age in the middle of prehistoric petroglyphs.
You guessed it, between nature and history, the Meuse is the great constant of this route so pleasant to take. In Flanders, the river gives the best of itself, especially with the animals that graze along its banks. Passing through ancient estuaries and pedaling along the water, you may also have company of friendly migrating birds. Totally bucolic.
