Swiss bees weathered this winter better than the previous one. About 15% of colonies did not survive the 2022/2023 cold season. Last spring, beekeepers noted the disappearance of more than 20% of colonies, a record.
The losses thus return to their usual level, according to the annual survey of apisuisse made public on Friday. For the pinnacle of Swiss beekeeping, the warm weather of 2022 allowed honey bees to collect enough pollen and nectar to develop strong colonies.
If we also take into account the losses before winter, as well as the colonies too weak to develop, the total mortality rises to 32.5%. Again, this is an improvement compared to the previous year which had recorded losses of 39.1% of colonies.
It is in the Mittelland region (BE, FR, SO, NE, JU) that the bees are doing best with winter mortality of only 10.8%. On the other hand, central Switzerland recorded the greatest disappearance of colonies (19.5%). The Lake Geneva region (GE, VD, VS) is within the national average (15.1%).
Note that the situation has improved in all regions. The survey was conducted online with 1,451 beekeepers, totaling 1,711 apiaries and 23,765 colonies.
