A group of eleven Cubans was tried and sentenced to prison for selling gasoline on social networks. According to the information disseminated by the official Cubadebate media, gasoline prices ranged between 350 and 600 pesos per liter.A total of 10 oral trials were held on June 1 at the Diez de Octubre Popular Municipal Court in Havana. On that occasion, 15 people were tried, and sentences of up to two years’ imprisonment were imposed.
“As a result of the tests carried out in the aforementioned judicial acts, the acting judges considered 13 defendants responsible and decided to acquit two of those involved; as their actions did not constitute a crime,” the statement stated.
The sanctions are justified in the crime of speculation, provided for in Article 310 of the current Penal Code.
To jail for selling gasoline
The statement indicates that it was taken into account that the events “were committed in a complex scenario, nuanced by the scarcity of fuels; determinant of the existence of an exceptional situation in the country”.
That is why it was agreed that the court agreed to increase the sanctioning frameworks provided for the aforementioned criminal classification. In this way, sentences of between one year and four months up to two years of imprisonment were imposed on 11 people. Two others must comply with correctional work without internment.
“Likewise, sanctions of confiscation of seized fuel, deprivation of rights and prohibition to leave the national territory were applied to those responsible. During the processing of the processes and in the holding of the oral trials, the legal guarantees and respect for due process enshrined in the Constitution of the Republic were complied with,” the information added.
The gasoline crisis has been going on for several weeks now, and the authorities offer no guarantee that the situation will improve in the short term. They only point out that option zero will not be reached, something that would represent the total collapse of the functioning of the country.
