Exfoliation is a very popular step in skin care. And for good reason, exfoliation gives our skin a facelift by ridding it of dead skin cells in particular. However, we sometimes make a few mistakes that greatly alter this beauty gesture. Here are a few to stop committing for the sake of your skin.
1 – Choosing an unsuitable scrub for your skin, the most common mistake
Very often, we choose the first scrub that comes without paying attention to his skin type. However, this is necessary information to choose the right scrub. If you have dry skin, you will only need not the same scrub than someone with oily skin.
On distingue two main types of scrub : chemical and mechanical. Each corresponds to a specific skin type.
- The mechanical scrub, also called grain scrub, is composed, as its second name suggests, of small grains. These can be crystals of sugar, jojoba, crushed fruit seeds, etc. The mechanical scrub must be applied to the skin and then rubbed in to remove dead skin. We adopt this scrub if we have a “normal” combination skinand even to oily trend.
- The chemical scrubor enzymatic exfoliation, goes with the help of acids alpha-hydroxy or beta-hydroxy dissolve dead skin cells. This method of exfoliation is much more suitable for dry, sensitive and acne-prone skin.
2 – Exfoliating too often, a mistake that prevents good exfoliation
We appreciate the feeling of “new skin” following a scrub. However, even if it is very pleasant, you should not exfoliate too often. This is an error that can turn out to be counter-productive and bad for our skin. For what ? Because too much exfoliation can lead to overproduction of sebum. This excess can itself cause weakening of the skin, which can become finer, more itchy and drier. It will also become much more sensitive to external aggressions.
To know the frequency of a scrub, you must, once more, take into account your skin type. Dry skin can be exfoliated 1 time every two weekswhile oily and combination skin only 1 time per week.
3 – Do not moisturize your skin following a scrub
This is a serious mistake, because it is precisely at this moment that your skin needs hydration the most. If you don’t, it will become dry and overproduce sebum.
So, following each exfoliation, apply a moisturizer or a moisturizing mask to form a protective barrier on the epidermis.
4 – Use aggressive accessories for the skin when exfoliating
Did you know that the way you apply your scrub can cause you harm? Yes, if you make the mistake of using aggressive accessories (mechanical brush, too exfoliating glove, etc.) to spread your scrub, you can damage your skin.
This action can irritate your skin or worsen existing skin lesions on your skin, and even dry it out. It is therefore preferable to use your hands to apply the product, especially if your skin is fragile.
5 – Exposing yourself to the sun following exfoliation, a mistake that can be dangerous
In summer, we often tend to exfoliate, especially to have an even tan. However, this beauty gesture is not without risks. Indeed, when you expose yourself to the sun, your skin will thicken in order to protect itself. Unfortunately, this natural reaction will be altered if you exfoliated just before.
Thus, your skin, deprived of its natural protection, will become very sensitive in particular with pigment spots. If you really want to exfoliate your skin in the summer, without making any mistakes, do your exfoliation 5 days or even a week before to enjoy sunbathing.
You now know the mistakes not to make when exfoliating. By taking them into consideration, you can gently and healthily exfoliate your skin.
