For a nutritionist or a dietician in the liberal profession, we can locate an indicative average income range of 3000 to 4000 euros net per month. But first, you will have to make a name for yourself and a good reputation in your area of expertise. On the other hand, evolving in the middle of the employees is no less interesting from a stability point of view… So, which path to choose and how to evolve? What to expect when you want to become a dietitian?

Becoming a nutritionist: what training?

A bac+7 or even a bac+12 level may be necessary to become an accomplished nutritionist. Training is a central aspect to be developed in a nutritionist resume dietician. First, in school, the candidate for this profession must have followed a specific course. In general, we opt for a scientific baccalaureate or, directly, a baccalaureate in health and social sciences and technologies. This step allows you to prepare for the technicality of the job, and to be familiar with the scientific and social aspect of the work of a nutritionist-dietician.

The nutritionist candidate can choose a training path allowing them to quickly integrate this world of therapists apart. You can start with a BTS in dietetics or even the DUT in biological engineering, dietetics option, which is obtained in 2 years of study. This first approach makes it possible to include positions as medical assistants or food risk prevention officers, for example. But it also leads to the pursuit of higher education: bachelor’s or master’s degrees in agri-food, health and safety… In any case, it is insufficient for those who want to have a title of accomplished nutritionist.

Ideally, one chooses the path of integration in medical school, with a specialization in dietetics in particular. After the baccalaureate, you can still opt for a course leading directly to a medical assistant diploma (Bachelor’s degree with “health access” option and 3 years of study). But other stages are open to aspiring nutritionists: general training in medical sciences (up to 3 years of study following the baccalaureate), internship and thesis defense (following 6 years of school), the university diploma or a DESC in nutrition to crown the course.

Career of nutritionist: a question of curriculum

It is obvious that the choice of professional course strongly depends on the training path chosen. Anyone who wants to be an employee without spending more than 2 years of study in training following the baccalaureate, can move into professional courses such as the BTS or the DUT. They can continue their training on a work-study basis, to progress in position and in responsibilities in their profession. It is therefore always possible to obtain an engineering degree in nutrition, while working. The sectors of activity most open to this type of profile and, in particular, to reconverted workers are undoubtedly the food industry and sports organisations. For those who want to work more in depth in the medical and therapeutic world are more oriented in medical schools. The door is wider for them in clinics, hospitals, liberal medical practices and public health networks…

In terms of experience, this aspect is not really imperative in public establishments. In the private sector, knowing that alternations and reconverted profiles are often accepted, the path is not narrower. The situation is more complicated for aspiring nutritionists who want to work independently.

Nutritionist: employee or liberal function?

It goes without saying that to be directly operational and comfortable financially, the choice of a short course such as the BTS and the DUT, with the possibility of continuing studies on a work-study basis is wise. Moreover, even in a salaried professional environment, nutritionists are paid the minimum wage and according to certain standards. For example, for nutritionists working in public hospitals, depending on the grade and step, the salary range is between 1600 euros and 2700 euros gross per month (indicative figures).

If you have a CV of an accomplished dietician with 9 to 12 years of study in the field, plus some experience in a medical or clinical environment, you will be all the more tempted by a liberal career. Some can earn more than 8000 euros net per month. But you still have to make yourself known to the community and the public.
