From the European Congress of Rheumatology, Dr. Guillermo Valenzuela, rheumatologist, shares with us the results of a study of which he was a researcher, on the use of apremilast in the treatment of psoriasis and prose arthritis.
According to Dr. Valenzuela, “the study sought to determine if the apremilast had some impact on preventing structural progression in patients with prose arthritis. The results were very promising and offer new perspectives in the management of this disease.”

Carrying out the study
During the study, MRI was used to assess the impact of the apremilast in the joints of the hands and the whole body. According to Dr. Valenzuela, “this methodology was novel and allowed us to obtain a more complete picture of the effect of the medication in structural progression.
The results showed that the apremilast had a significant protective effect on structural progression. In the words of Dr. Valenzuela, “this means that the medication can help reduce damage to joints and preserve the function of patients with prose arthritis“.
The study also highlighted the importance of considering the axial skeleton in the analysis of the prose arthritis. According to Dr. Valenzuela, “this comprehensive approach allows us to better understand how the disease affects different areas of the body, including the spine.”
