Vienna (OTS) – The who’s who of the European space community met today in Vienna and discussed the next big step in the European space program: an astronautical mission to the moon. The FFG, to which the Aerospace Agency belongs and is the docking station for Austria’s economy and science to the international space scene, was also right in the middle. Chancellor Karl Nehammer encouraged ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher in his plan to bring European astronauts to the moon within the next ten years and was pleased regarding the inclusion of Carmen Possnig as a reserve astronaut in the new astronaut class of the European Space Agency (ESA) .
The importance of a European moon mission for the international community, economy and society was discussed in four top-class panels at the conference entitled ‘Ready for the Moon’. FFG Managing Director Klaus Pseiner said following his panel ‘The way forward for Europe’: “A moon mission shows Europe’s technological performance and its ability to cooperate. A European will only set foot on the moon if everyone pulls together and makes substantial contributions.” The mission was launched in March this year by an independent High Level Advisory Group (HLAG) led by the former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen recommended. “ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher accepts the challenges that a manned moon mission entails. In doing so, he puts European space travel in the limelight and sets a strong example. Austria supports him in this,” says Pseiner.
