Five collector cars to put in your garage this week

Two unlikely V8 siblings, the perfect Defender, the ultimate seductive Italian sports car of the 1950s and the ultimate racing icon to celebrate Porsche’s 75 years. These are the treasures we unearthed in the Classic Driver Market this week.

A Q Car to our liking

For us, De Tomaso is one of the truly electrifying brands – the intricate and turbulent history only adds to its allure. That’s why we just can’t get enough of this rare little V8 sports car, even though it doesn’t even sport the De Tomaso badging. Designed by none other than Marcello Gandini, the De Tomaso Biguà concept car made its Geneva debut in 1996. But by the time production started in Modena in 1999, the car was already branded Qvale Mangusta following the ailing De Tomaso brand and American investor family Qvale split. The coupe with the folding roof is powered by a 4.6-liter Ford V8 and has been praised for its agility, handling and sound. But in the end fewer than 300 were built. Although very rare, even low mileage cars like this Canadian example are still quite affordable.

A rare jewel

There is a theory that says that every person on our planet can be connected to another person by a chain of no more than five acquaintances. We think the same is true for automobiles: this 2007 MG SV-R is the best example. In fact, the story of this car begins when MG/Rover bought a certain Italian manufacturer called Qvale and then chose their small V8 sports car called Mangusta as the basis for a new Italo-British MG supercar. Designed by Peter Stevenson, the father of the McLaren F1, the MG SV received a box frame for the chassis, carbon fiber body panels and a Ford V8 engine that developed 320hp – in the more powerful MG SV-R this increased to 385hp. This stunning example in Mirror Silver with a black and red interior is not only the last of the 42 SV-R built, but also one of only 23 left-hand drive variants. It may be slightly more expensive than the Qvale Mangusta, but we think these companions make a wonderfully quirky pairing for your garage in spirit.

Black Olive zum Cappuccino

We would all like to feel like individualists with a lifestyle that is different from the mainstream. But as the unforgotten director Helmut Dietl once remarked: “In the end, everyone wants a light-flooded antique bush.” The realization might also apply to cars: at the bar we rave regarding the Qvale Mangusta and MG SV-R, but if When push comes to shove, we follow the herd and invest our hard-earned money in a classic Porsche 911. Or a classic Land Rover Defender. And who would want to blame us for that? Anyway, this Instagram dream has been customized by the House of Cool of a 2007 Defender 90 Td4 in Black Olive over Cappuccino and is now for sale in Portugal. What a coincidence! Didn’t you plan on moving to Lisbon with your digital start-up anyway? Because of the relaxed lifestyle? The low taxes? We thought so too…

Sensual, beautiful, Siata

So, your Ferrari 250 GTO is one of only 36 examples ever built? Good luck spotting him in the Pebble Beach parking lot! Luckily, this Siata 208 CS is easier to spot as only 18 were built and only nine of them were given Boano bodywork. But seriously: There is hardly a sensually beautiful and seductive Italian sports car from the golden fifties than a Siata 208 CS. Just look how the wavy front bewitches the road, admire the low roofline, those leather-clad sports seats! If that’s not perfection, then what is? This dark blue Bellezza will soon be auctioned at RM Sotheby’s in Monterey. One can dream, right?

Racing icon in sea blue

You probably already know that Porsche is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. Why not celebrate this anniversary in a fitting way and buy a verified racing icon to crown your collection? This absolutely stunning Porsche 911 Carrera 2.8 RSR is one of just 55 race cars built by the Porsche racing department and competed successfully across France with various private teams before this 911 took part in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and took one in Group 4 a respectable 10th place. Painted in beautiful sea blue with red accents, this RSR is eligible for all FIA historic motorsport events and is currently offered by Mechatronik’s Cartique – ready for a return to the Sarthe or the Tour Auto.
