Shots fired at homes of Democrats – US Republicans arrested
| Reading time: 2 minutes
Solomon Pena ran for a seat in the New Mexico House of Representatives, but lost to a Democrat. The Republican unsuccessfully complained regarding voter fraud. Now he is suspected of having attacked his opponents as well.
HA failed Republican candidate may be behind a series of gun attacks on the homes of Democratic local politicians in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Special police forces arrested Solomon Pena at his home on Monday (local time), Albuquerque Police Chief Harold Medina said. In addition to the politician, other people were also taken into custody.
Pena ran for a seat in the New Mexico House of Representatives but lost to longtime incumbent Miguel P. Garcia, a Democrat, in November. According to police, following his defeat, Pena contacted county and state legislators, denouncing allegations of voter fraud. There was no evidence of widespread manipulation in New Mexico in 2020 or 2022.
Shots were fired from moving cars
Shortly following Pena’s talks with MPs, there were incidents of gunfire at or near the homes of two New Mexico state magistrates and two state legislators between early December and early January. Suspects fired shots from passing cars.
Albuquerque Deputy Police Chief Kyle Hartsock said at least five people were involved in the incidents, including Pena. The Republican paid others to carry out at least two of the gun attacks. At least once, however, he himself “pushed the trigger”.
Police chief Medina described Pena as the “mastermind” of an apparently politically motivated criminal plot. Mayor Tim Keller found even clearer words. “This kind of radicalism is a threat to our nation and has made its way right to our doorstep in Albuquerque,” he said. “But I know we’re pushing it back and we’re not going to let that cross the threshold.”
