Internationally, Walmart is no longer just a name in the supermarket world: The company made its move into healthcare in 2019, when it launched Walmart Health.
These are health clinics in their own stores. “Walmart Health provides primary and urgent care, labs, X-rays and diagnostics, behavioral health, dental, optometry and hearing services, all in one center, right next to where you buy groceries,” says the company itself.
The company’s commitment is “to make healthcare more accessible, convenient and affordable for customers in the communities we serve.”
The retail giant plans to have more than 75 community health centers in the United States by the end of 2024.
Could you bring this health division to Chile? For now, the company began the process to register the Lider Salud brand in the country for hospital services and clinics, nursing homes; medical services in general, as well as psychology, dentistry and opticians, among other categories of the same type.
Consulted the company, it stated: “The brand registration responds to a Walmart strategy worldwide, but with respect to Chile there are no definitions in this area.”
The company – the world’s leading supermarket chain – operates approximately 10,500 stores in 20 countries (including the US, Mexico and Chile), employing 2.1 million workers worldwide.
The company formed its Walmart Health division in 2019 following testing smaller primary care clinics in spaces in its grocery stores. Those facilities opened in 2014, when the retailer was exploring the idea of in-store patient care.
In 2021, Walmart Health acquired a telehealth company and expanded into virtual services, “allowing us to offer accessible and convenient care to more patients when and how they want it,” the company highlights on its website, which lists highlights that the establishments are operated by qualified medical professionals, including physicians, nurse practitioners, dentists, behavioral health providers and optometrists.
