Since May 3, motorists who take the E40 motorway daily towards Brussels have been put to the test. A defective expansion joint, an essential part for the proper functioning of the engineering structure, had to be repaired “as a matter of urgency”. Work had been started to replace it and, therefore, the speed limit to 50 km / h. A limitation that has been introduced for the safety of the workers working on the site, but also of the users because of the extra thickness induced by this temporary seal.
If the end of the project was initially scheduled for May 12, we quickly learned that it was going to take a significant delay due to a technical constraint. “When we inspected the foundations of the joint, the experts noted that a part had to be changed. It’s quite technical. This piece must be made to measure and it must be ordered from a specialized company, which was not initially planned,” said Héloïse Winandy, spokesperson for Sofico.
From June 17
Good news, however, this Friday. The Sofico announces that the night work to be carried out at the degraded expansion joint has been planned. As explained, “they depended on the delivery date of the necessary custom-made parts”. And the maximum speed can finally be raised to 90 km/h in the zone on Saturday June 17.
We will have to take our troubles patiently until then since the traffic conditions will always have to be adapted. “Interventions at the joint will take place, as announced, only at night”, specifies Sofico. From Monday June 5 to Saturday June 10, as well as from Monday June 12 to Saturday June 17, between 9 p.m. a maximum speed of 50 km/h. During the day, three lanes will remain accessible with a maximum speed limited to 50 km/h.
