The Brussels Criminal Court sentenced, last Thursday, Alain Nimegeers, former elected representative of the MR to the City of Brussels, to a suspended sentence of 30 months in prison and a fine of 1,600 euros for corruption and fraud once morest people without -papers, to whom he promised to regularize the stay in Belgium.

A scam that lasted 7 years

The facts take place between 2011 and 2018 when Alain Nimegeers was a municipal councilor, police adviser and adviser to the CPAS. In 2020, he was placed under arrest warrant and charged, along with his alleged accomplices. Before the court, the political representative admitted having promised, in return for the payment of sums of money between 200 and 5,000 euros, to around sixty people, to provide them with support for the regularization of their stay, for the granting of social assistance or social housing.

Not only are these illegal acts, but also the functions of this Brussels elected official did not allow him to act in this matter. Alain Nimegeers set up this scam with other people, including a man, now deceased. The latter was in charge of looking for potential victims. The sums of money improperly obtained were divided between them. The court particularly insisted on “the seriousness of any act which consists in demanding sums of money from people in precarious situations so that they have the hope of obtaining a ‘pass-right’ “.
