Iranian Foreign Minister Welcomes Initiatives to Expand Relations with Cairo

Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said, Thursday, that his country “welcomes the initiatives aimed at expanding relations between Tehran and Cairo,” and stressed, “There is no bilateral problem between the two countries.”

Abdullahian added, in statements reported by the Iranian News Agency (IRNA), that the visit of the Sultan of Oman, Haitham bin Tariq, to ​​Iran “was intended to respond to the visit of Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi that took place during the past year to the Sultanate.”

Referring to the Sultan of Oman’s visit to Egypt that preceded his visit to Iran, the Iranian foreign minister said: “When news reached senior Iranian officials regarding his talks with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi regarding improving relations with Iran, it was confirmed that there is no bilateral problem between the two countries. It is noteworthy that the Iranian guide, Ali Khamenei, had expressed his welcome to what he described as “Egypt’s desire” to resume diplomatic relations with his country, during his meeting with the Sultan of Oman in Iran, on Monday.

In a series of tweets posted on Khamenei’s Twitter account following his meeting with the Sultan of Oman, the Iranian guide said: “We believe that developing relations between Iran and Oman in all fields is in the interest of both parties. Raising the level of cooperation between the two countries is important because both share the Strait of Hormuz water crossing.” Very important.”

And the Iranian guide added, “We welcome Egypt’s desire to resume relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran, and we have no problem in this regard.”

The Sultan of Oman had arrived in Iran, on Sunday, for a two-day visit, during which he met Khamenei and the Iranian president.

Relations between Cairo and Tehran deteriorated following the Iranian Islamic Revolution, and witnessed a remarkable improvement during the era of the late Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, but the development of relations did not last long with the removal of Morsi and the “Muslim Brotherhood” from power, as relations returned to a state of stalemate once more.
