We took the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra and the Razr 40 in hand, the two clamshell smartphones that challenge the giant Samsung and its Galaxy Z Flip.
If you read Frandroid frequently, you must have seen us harping on more than once that all the same, it would be good if Samsung had some competition in Europe on folding smartphones. The most observant among you will have noticed, it’s now done. On the book format, facing the Galaxy Z Fold, there is an Honor Magic Vs. On the clamshell format, it’s more complicated. Admittedly, we have the Oppo Find N2 Flip, but given the complicated state of health of the Chinese giant, it is difficult to advise it with eyes closed.

Yes, Motorola released a Razr (2022) last year, but this one looked more like a prototype for hackers than anything else. This year, finally, Motorola presents a completely successful model with its Razr 40 Ultra. Alongside it, we will also find a model that breaks the prices of folding, the Razr 40 at 900 euros all round. We took them both in hand before their official presentation, here are our first impressions.
An external screen that makes you dizzy
We start with the most luxurious, the Razr 40 Ultra. The first element that is obvious is of course the 3.9-inch OLED external screen, refreshed in 144 Hz please. Not only does this fine the Galaxy Z Flip 4, but it seems obvious that it is much better integrated than on the previous Razr.
The screen surrounds the two photo modules and the interface allows any application to flow behind the sensors, in a result that is aesthetic to say the least. Of course, not all apps will be practical to use with this option, but its presence is to be welcomed. Especially since the phone remembers the last display to date on an app, which avoids having to reconfigure it each time it is opened.
This is also what emerges overall from the use of the external screen of this Razr: it is really a mini smartphone that we will be able to use “à la carte“, of which we will adjust the small details as we wish.
Motorola therefore seems, for the first time in a long time, to have a real card to play to stand out once morest the telephony giant that is Samsung. Even the design and finishes have nothing to envy to a Galaxy Z Flip 4. The borders around the screen are now just as thin, the edges are nice, and the phone is very thin. Almost too thin, because unfolded, I sometimes had trouble using it fully to type without fear of dropping it.
It might even be argued, to some extent, that the design of the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra goes further than Samsung’s Flip. It incorporates a teardrop hinge, which offers both a perfect closure, but also an almost imperceptible fold.
Motorola Razr 40: the folding price revolution is underway
Finally, finally, a manufacturer has crossed the Rubicon and released a folding smartphone under 1000 euros. We bet that this is the first of a long line.
Its nickname, the Motorola Razr 40, sold for 900 euros. In idea, it is more or less the same model mentioned above, but with an external screen of 1.5 inches.
Honestly, at first glance, it seemed downright narrow to us, especially for those who are used to the 1.9-inch Galaxy Z Flip 4. The screen looks like a tiny rectangle wedged to the left of the two sensors. Some widgets are available, you can of course always take a selfie with the main photo modules by having a screen feedback. But the experience is of course more minimalist than on the ultra, or even on a Z Flip or an Oppo Find N2 Flip.
This will have the advantage of its disadvantages. Here we return to the basic concept of the first Samsung Flips: a compact phone that can be closed with a small screen to stay connected, and that’s it. We will see during our test if the Razr 40 still manages to justify paying the full price for its concept.
The same goes for the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra, which starts at a slightly higher price than the last Galaxy Z Flip when it was released, 1199 euros once morest 1109 euros. Add to this that the Galaxy Z Flip 4 is today at 800 euros on the Samsung site.
