1 The youngest are not necessarily the most aware
During consultations at the sexual health center in downtown Quimper, Dr. Fanny Le Fur notes that young patients use condoms little or not at all. “They often have bad experiences with this type of contraception. They do not know how to position it well, which can cause erection problems. So they let it go.” It would be necessary, according to the doctor, to push further awareness of contraception, within colleges and high schools and to deconstruct the stereotypes conveyed by pornography, where the condom is absent subscribers.
2 The number of contaminations does not decrease
At the Center Hospitalier de Cornouaille (Chic) in Quimper, in 2021, 466 people were followed for HIV infection, according to figures from COREVIH Bretagne, a health authority which tends to facilitate the care of people infected with HIV. A study by Santé Publique France shows that 69 people out of 1,000 were tested for HIV in the same year in Brittany. Either one of the lowest screening rates in France.
“From year to year, the number of contamination does not drop,” notes Marjolaine Le Port, vaccination nurse in Quimper. However, HIV prevention treatments have greatly evolved. There is, for example, Prep, an HIV prevention pill. It is accessible to all people who have not contracted the virus and works “at 99.9%, 100% support”, underlines the nurse.
3 They are still watching
Even if the numbers of carriers of the virus stagnate, HIV-positive people can live with the HIV virus. “They can even have a normal life,” reassures Dr. Mathilde Gilbert, from the Chic sexual health center. “Current treatments make it possible to make the HIV load in the body negative and not to progress to the AIDS stage”. The other side of the coin: “the disease is no longer frightening”, continues Doctor Gilbert “in the 90s, we were hyper-sensitized on the subject because there were no treatments. This is no longer the case today, but we must remain very vigilant”. This week of good sexual health is therefore more than necessary for professionals.
