Japan Tourism Industry Sees Record-Breaking Number of Overnight Visitors in April 2023

TOKYO, June 1 (Xinhua) — The Japan Tourism Agency (JTA) released Wednesday the total number of overnight visitors at hotels and other hotels in Japan for the month of April. It was 10.38 million, surpassing the 10 million mark for the first time since January 2020.

Preliminary information published by the bureau This figure is up 19.5 times from the same month in 2022 and 92 percent of the figure in April 2019, preceding the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

for Japanese travelers The number of overnight guests rose to 37.24 million, a 12.5 percent year-on-year increase. But it was down 5.6 percent from pre-pandemic times in 2019.

The total number of foreign and Japanese guests staying overnight at such establishments totaled 47.63 million, a 41.6 percent increase from the previous year. But it was down 6.1 percent from April 2019.
